Anna Vanzan

Anna Vanzan, PhD in Near Eastern Studies (New York University). She is co- founder of the journal Afriche e Orienti and member of the Scientific Committee of: Quaderni Asiatici; Acta Turcica; Journal of Shi’a and Islamic Studies, Altre Modernità. Though she is interested in the Middle East in general, her research is focused especially on Iran, Central Asia and the sub-continent (Pakistan, Afghanistan, Muslim India).

She has been working in women and gender studies with particular interest for Muslim societies. She has many publications in Italian and English: her book, La storia velata: le donne dell’islam nell’immaginario italiano, (Edizioni del Lavoro, Roma, 2006) a history of the image of Muslim women in Italian culture from the Middle Ages has been awarded with the International Prize Feudo di Maida 2006. Her book Gli sciiti (Mulino, Bologna 2008) is a portrait of the Shiite Islam between history, politics and culture. She coedited (with S. Rastegar) Muraqqa ye sharqi, Studies in Honor of Peter Chelkowski, AIEP, S. Marino, 2007. Her book Figlie di Shahrazad, scrittrici iraniane dal XIX secolo a oggi (Bruno Mondadori, Milano 2009) is the first story of Iranian women’s literature. Le donne di Allah, viaggio nei femminismi islamici, (Women of Allah, a Journey through Islamic Feminisms, Bruno Mondadori, Milano, 2010) is dedicated to the emergence of Islamic Feminisms. Her book, Che genere di islam, omosessuali, transessuali e queer tra shari’a e nuove interpretazioni (with J. Guardi, Ediesse, Roma, 2012) considers the multifaceted relation between Islam and homosexuality. She has also authored a book on women’s role in the “Arab Spring” (Primavere rosa, Libraccio, Milano, 2013) and on the relationship between women and the symbology of garden in the Muslim cultures (Donne e giardino nel mondo islamico, Pontecorboli, Firenze, 2013). She also wrote Diario Persiano. Viaggio sentimentale in Iran (A Persian diary. A sentimental Jouney to Iran), Il Mulino, Bologna 2017.
